memory summary; spider traps

time; day 28 (?)
"Hersh, you continue in that direction." Randall was saying from the ledge on the side of the room. It was far too tall for you to safely climb or him him to safely jump, so separated you stayed. You tried not to look as uncomfortable about this as you felt.
Of course Randall knew, and offered a smirk. "Come on, I'll be fine. I'm sure we'll find each other again further along."
You try not to sigh. "Hmm, you're probably right. Look after yourself until then, won't you?"
Randall only laughed. "You worry too much, Hersh. See you later!" And off he went, running down one of the long halls. This time you do sigh, because it was so painfully Randall to face down death traps with a laugh and barely a wave behind.
And this place was a death trap. Not for the first time you wonder why you ever agreed to this, heading down a different hallway. Even you could admit the ruins were amazing, you didn't need any love for archaeology to see that, but really, you had no desire to die hundreds of feet below the ground.
Which seemed to be where the ruins wanted you, since the next thing you found was a large pit in the floor. You stare down it- were those webs? - shovel tight in your hands. "Blimey, what's this massive pit doing here? It's pitch black down there, I don't like this at all..." Who were you even talking to? You try not to sigh as you step back, then turn and-
"Ah-" Is all you manage to shout when you notice the spider that had fallen in behind you. You recognize it as poisonous and more so bizarrely large, they weren't supposed to be that large, were they? Of course in the shock you drop your damned shovel, and as the spider thankfully scurried away you try to calm your racing heart with the most exasperated sigh you can manage. "Well, that wasn't the most clever thing you've ever done, Hershel."
You needed that blasted thing, and now it was in what looked like a spider nest. A poisonous spider nest. You have to stand back a moment because really, was this your life? Was any of this actually happening? You consider spending a few minutes bemoaning your fate here but really, those spiders weren't going to get any less poisonous and the shovel any less down a damn hole.
If you were clever you could definitely make it out, right?
