(vivarium) memory 7

memory summary; moving

gained through; sleepover

time; day 50

When the school bell rang you always waited, letting the other kids yell and jump around and hurry out to the hall in a loud, noisy mess. It's not that you didn't like them, nothing like that, it was just easier to wait for things to clear and head out in your own time, usually with the teacher trailing behind you to watch the whole gaggle of preteens and make sure they didn't do anything stupid.

People don't really talk to you as you pass, and it really doesn't bother you. It isn't a cold silence, or an angry one, or even a pointed one- they just don't know you and you don't know them. Somewhere along the line you never really made that connection with the people around you, and even if that seemed to worry your parents and teachers it never really bothered you. When it came down to it you just didn't really know what to say to any of them, like your words got caught in your throat and jumbled up even before you really knew what to say. When they asked you questions about yourself you always had to think about the answer, muse it over, and by the time you caught up they were already so far ahead.

It was fine, really, it wasn't like you were lonely. You had your family, you had A-----, you had plenty of things and you didn't understand why those answers always made people frown.

When you get home, leaving the bus and your lone seat behind, your parents are waiting.

"Hershel, dear." Your mother says, smoothing out your stubborn hair with a smile as you walk over to the table they're sitting at. "We wanted to talk to you about something."

"We're thinking of moving." Your father continues for her, hands around a half finished mug of something you couldn't name off the top of your head. "We have for a while, weren't sure we'd be able to but the timing seems right."

"Oh- to where?" You ask, wondering if you should feel more shaken about this. It makes you uncomfortable in some way, large changes always did, as much as denied it, but you couldn't think of many reasons why you'd be upset.

"To Stansbury, where Uncle Doug lives. It's a lovely place, don't you think?" Lucille responds. "It's not all that far, so we can always come back to visit."

"School's good too." Roland continues. "Better job offer- it'll be a good match for us, I think."

You have to pause at that, and the way they're looking at you makes you wonder how much of this is for your sake even though they'll never say. "It sounds great, Ma, Pa." You finally offer, relieved that they both seemed happy with that answer.

"It will be, we could all use a change of scenery." Lucille answers as she stands, tone brighter. "It'll be some time yet, but do get to sorting your things, Hershel, you don't need all those books you know. Maybe you should donate some."

"Ma..." You sigh, but let her get back to bustling around.
